The Experience
If you get the chance to visit Kona Hawaii and you are a diver, please don’t pass on the opportunity to do one of the Manta Ray night dives.
While I was blessed to experience a Manta while diving at the same location earlier in the day, the night dive experience was mind blowing to say the least.
The Manta Rays seem to like all the plankton that the lights from the nearby airport attracts. Based on the feedback from the Aggressor staff, they can been found at this location most nights. Bring some divers, bright lights, and you will get a show for sure. While we shouldn’t touch the mantas, they don’t seem to abide by the same rules. The can swim so close doing their magical backflips that it isn’t uncommon to get a small nudge. I think you will see that happen to me in the video below at the 1:30 mark.
To make the experience even that much more interesting, for the majority of this dive, there was a fairly large green moray inside one of the the milk crates that held the bright lights. So, we were watching the mantas while keeping a close eye on our other friend.
The video you will see below was made quickly so it didn’t get much editing. If you want to get the full experience, check out the full Kona Aggressor 2019 post.
